Dysfunction! in the government

A conversation I had yesterday led me to thinking about the state of our government from a different perspective. Until now I had been viewing it through a Democrat vs Republican lens (I am limiting the scope of this blog to the two parties since they are the focal point of the current crisis), trying to figure out what madness has overtaken Capitol Hill. After yesterday, however, I am realizing that the current dysfunction is merely a microcosmic manifestation of the state our country is in as a whole. Regardless of what side of the aisle we are discussing, this country has become so entrenched in us vs. them warfare that there is no room for compromise. Democrats and Republicans are fundamentally different in the way they believe that the government should be run and I don’t think anyone would disagree with that statement. Implied in that statement is the idea that each party believes their vision is correct. In the past few years each has taken such a hard line stance that nothing is getting accomplished and the result is that the country is stalling. What they are failing to realize is that the country is divided between the two ideals and there must be some kind of give and take so as not to completely alienate the other side.

As you can see from the chart above, this country is essentially split down the middle when it comes to political allegiances. That means it is the responsibility of our government to work together in an effort to govern for all of the people, not to claim the majority and disregard the other 50%. That is the entire point of having state Senators and Congressmen! They are meant to ensure that everyone has representation, even if their party is currently in the minority. If one party dominates the conversation and dominates legislation then we are no longer a true republic but something more akin to an oligarchy. I can only assume that this is not what our founding fathers had envisioned when they drafted and then signed the Constitution. Until every Senator, Congressman and the President of the United States is elected from the same party it is the duty, no the obligation, of our elected officials to get off of their soapboxes and realize that they cannot always take the hard line stance and be inflexible at the expense of the American people. As long as the country has citizens in both camps then both camps have to be adequately represented. A friend of mine has equated the U.S. to the Roman Empire and says it is a matter of time before we fall. I certainly hope we can put aside differences and prove her wrong.

Whoa I agree with you on something! That might be a miracle straight from God. In other words, can't we all just get along? It IS so us vs them it disgusts me that this country and the government act like children. It makes me ashamed.
