A Man and His Thoughts

Michigan Splendor

Anyone that has been to Michigan knows that it is a state full of natural beauty in all of her seasons but it is fall that sweeps me up and carries me away. The air is crisp and cool as it fills your lungs. The trees are resplendent with their blazing red, burnt orange and golden yellow leaves and provide an amazing contrast to the steel gray sky. The many lakes have turned from their normal calm blue to a roiling, frothy, inky black mass whose waves batter the shores. Jack O’ Lanterns act as the silent sentinels of the neighborhood until Halloween arrives. It is an amazing time of year!

Fall in Michigan is a Michigander’s one chance to feel as if they can outwit Mother Nature. In the summer we seek out the shade to cool down and in the winter we seek out warmth from the bitter cold. In the fall, however, we throw on jeans and a sweatshirt and can spend hours outside in perfect comfort. Walks are pleasant in the sunshine and not nearly as treacherous as they would be in the winter. While the November wind causes it to rain down leaves we arm ourselves with rakes and leaf blowers in an attempt to corral them into a manageable pile for burning or street pickup. The plumes of white/gray smoke from leaves burning, along with the cloying smell are commonplace as is the sound of children laughing while they jump into those enormous piles in the yard. Watching my children get lost in the leaves fills me with a great sense of joy and reminds me of my happy childhood. Alas, fall never seems to stay long and soon enough the great white shroud will descend upon this great state and Mother Nature will have the last laugh.
